New stricter eligibility requirements for the YouTube Partner Program

YouTube announced today that to participate in the YouTube Partner Program, your channel must have:

* 4,000 hours of watchtime (240,000 minutes of watchtime) in the past 12 months

* at least 1,000 subscribers

* unchanged: your channel will be reviewed to make sure it adheres to the YouTube Partner Program policies, YouTube Terms of Service, YouTube spam policies, and our Community Guidelines.

What does that mean?

If you haven’t yet applied to the YouTube Partner Program:

As soon as your channel reaches the new threshold, you can apply for review.

If your application is currently pending review:

If your channel meets the new eligibility thresholds, it will be reviewed in next few weeks. Review will not happen until the new eligibility thresholds are met.

If your channel is currently in the YouTube Partner Program

Your channel must meet the new eligibility thresholds to remain in the program. If your channel is currently below the threshold, you’ll have until February 20th, 2018 before ads stop running on your videos. If you reach the new threshold during the grace period, you will not be removed from the program.

Why is YouTube doing this?

These higher standards will also help us prevent potentially inappropriate videos from monetizing which can hurt revenue for everyone.

And what about the Creators who are no longer eligible?

Though these changes will affect a significant number of channels, 99% of those affected were making less than $100 per year in the last year, with 90% earning less than $2.50 in the last month. Any of the channels who no longer meet this threshold will be paid what they’ve already earned based on our AdSense policies. After thoughtful consideration, we believe these are necessary compromises to protect our community.
